Komiyama Arashi & Kirishima Sora

“Wild Scenarios Based on Antithesis”

“Mhm, I hear you, and I have just the solution for you... I just have to turn your lacking love life into our song’s story!”

“Huh…?”

“Leave it to me, your local smooth operator, to save this song from your miserably stale, virgin life!”

“Wh–?! You better not!”

“An unrequited love.”

Their songwriting drew to a halt. Arashi has no experience in romantic pursuits, and grapples with the elusive nature of his own emotions. In stark contrast to the singer’s mounting impatience, Sora seemed more entertained by Arashi’s frustration, a knowing smile suggesting that he was plotting something. Fueled by Arashi’s barren romantic landscape, Sora launched into a frenzy of what-if scenarios that painted Arashi tumbling head first into passionate romances.

However, these fantasies seemed more in line with Sora’s own history... The pain he’d masked behind smiles, and the undeniable truth that, deep down, Sora craved for companionship.

As Sora spoke, Arashi began to see things more clearly, bringing them closer to the essence of their new song…

Takarada Iori & Kaji Haruhi

“A Memorial Built From Memory Gaps”

“Iori, remember the promise we made the day of our graduation, aaall the way back in elementary school?”

“Uh… Maybe? Can you, uh, remind me of the details; for reminiscence, of course…”

“You don’t remember? …You’re kidding, right? C’mon, it’s a decision that literally led us here! Are you stupid to the core, or do you simply like being scolded?”

“I genuinely can’t remember what we said back then! …Please, don’t beat around the bush, just tell me what it is!”

“A love born from an indelible promise.”

Taking a break in their song-making brainstorming, Haruhi suddenly brought up the promise they had made on their graduation, one that Iori had completely forgotten about. The air hung heavier than before: Haruhi was astounded that both his recollection and sudden nostalgia wasn’t shared, while Iori was frustrated at his lacking memory. Haruhi insisted that this very promise held the key to completing their new song, yet refused to divulge the content of their vow.

“I’m not giving you the answer. I want you to dig deep, and remember it on your own.” There was a sweet, clumsy playfulness behind the sting of his stubbornness, testament to the deep bond they had nurtured since childhood.

One carved each moment shared into the fabric of his being, while the other accidentally paid a little less mind to that seemingly life-changing instant.

The bittersweet discrepancy in their recollections highlighted the time they had spent close together, albeit now with a funny, mixed feeling.

Sebumi Towa & Zaizen Mirai

“All-nighter Between Foreigners”

“Okay, okay, I’ll use another metaphor. Love is like, uh… A delusion. So far so good, Sebumi?”

“That’s a hard word… Like, um, like a misunderstanding?”

“Sorta. Sometimes, when you’re in love, you don’t see the flaws in the person you like; you even stop listening to yer friends’ warnings because you’re so convinced your feelings are mutual, an’ that the other party is perfect. TLDR; it spells a whole lot of trouble.”

“That, that sounds awful, and honestly pretty scary… I hope I never have to feel that way…”

“A fleeting, puppy love.”

Mirai struggled to articulate what love, as a concept, was to a still-naive Towa. This feeling was nebulous in essence, breeding ground for trouble, and sometimes threatened to bring ruin to the stablest of lives. Still, many people pursue love regardless of the consequences, perhaps drawn to the beauty of cherishing someone so deeply, the mere thought of them could hurt.

Through the screens that bridged Hokkaido and Aichi, the night grew long. What began with an innocent question diverged into an impromptu, remote study session: honest debates punctuated by laughter and off-tangents; wash and repeat.

Their “midnight bootcamp” sparked by “love” was but the natural prolongation of their unwavering friendship.

Kurahashi Kairi & Takatsuki Kagura

“Long-distance & Communication”

“No, but, seriously—you? The absolute mind-numbing pain-butt, writing a love song? Kajippi ‘s sick, for realsies. He’s basically makin’ it a Mission: Impossible fo’ n’ya~”

“Worry not. There is nothing that I, Takatsuki Kagura, cannot achieve.”

“Whew, okayyy~ Remind me how many lovers you’ve had up ‘til now?”

“My first true love is tomatoes, of course. Don’t you remember?”

“A playful love, shared in laughter.”

With Kairi still in the United States and Kagura working in Japan, circumstances forced the duo into remote songwriting sessions; but old habits die hard, and their conversation quickly went sideways. As night fell, Kagura began sermoning his vocalist on the symbolism of love, only to sputter into embarrassed silence under Kairi’s unabashed advice on love, far less straight-laced on the subject than his songwriter. Casual banter escalated into a transpacific quarrel: though their opinions made these polar opposites stand in contradiction, they were effectively influencing each other’s perspective.

Thus, this heated clash on diverging understandings on love became the unpolished, raw core of their new song…

Miyazono Tomoe & Sakaki Oshiro

“The Heartthrob Theory and Complex”

“There’s this line I came up with that you absolutely GOT to say along the song! Trust yer ol’ Oshiro on this!!”

“A line? What are you on now…”

“Weeell, I got a miiite inspired by this character in a shojo manga I been readin’ lately. They’re just like you, it’s near ‘bout uncanny: same build, same face, even y’all’s personality are identical”

“We’re not doing that. I don’t want to be turned into some manga protagonist.”

“Errr… They’re a side character actually…”

“A tough love, contrary to appearances.”

Oshiro’s sole tangible knowledge on love came from the plethora of shojo manga he still ravenously read, introducing his rather unique views to his vocalist. Tomoe finds romance to be a frustrating concept to understand; a difficult enigma doubled with his composer’s animated study on the “heartthrob effect,” only made Tomoe a ticking bomb ready to lash out. Fraught with misunderstandings, energy on the matter hardly meeting, their production slowly ground to a halt. Still, Oshiro persevered, chipping away Tomoe’s aloof attitude, one that hid the feelings the vocalist dares not explore.

Brick by brick, Oshiro’s clumsy approach shapes the foundations of their new song…
