“moratorium”

Lyrics and Composition: Zaizen Mirai (cv.Kimura Ryohei)

Singer: Miyazono Tomoe (cv.Hirose Yuya)

Listen to the title on Spotify.

A faint, clear whistle grazed my ears.

On the pitch black ceiling above,

I penned a silent dream.

Even now, I want to hold onto that fragile instant,

count every second of that ethereal moment.

No way out, I can't escape

from this moratorium.

Oh, to unlock this door…

Where's realness,

where's authenticity, I wonder?

Guess I'm another hypocrite in this room full of fools.

Rulers and ruled, their cold,

emotionless orders come to haunt me again.

Even I don't know where the real me hides.

The words won't come out, I can't get it off my chest.

To disappear, to exist and vanish once more—

such is the absolute rule.

My life was hampered from the very start.

Why, how many tries will it take to reach my dreams too?

Once, twice, more?

Ah, yeah, I can't fly.

With starlights in my eyes

I penned in the pitch-black night sky

the song of my wishes (1)

I, too, can fight for that one second

under the sunshine.

My moratorium is here,

in this diorama—

will the door open for me?

I threw away everything that mattered along the way

All I want is to be perceived.

No loss, no gain, the world is a break-even. (2)

Addition, subtraction, I'll be hushed an’ subdued anyway.

Even sympathy has no place in this city.

If the faint glint buried deep in my chest

was my only beacon light,

maybe I'd never find the winning post.

You don't have to tell me

how harsh and cruel the world is;

I've realised it long ago already, and still…

“I want to leave,” “I cannot leave”

how much more of a coward can I be?

With “perhaps” an’ “maybe,” I croon to myself

how much I want, how I can't

return to that year, that day, that time, over ‘n over.

I've been crawling on this Earth since forever—

will I settle like a parasite,

let my true self, even my spirit,

be gnawed off and vanish one day or another?

My life was hampered from the very start—

then, let's place our bets

see who comes on top of this game between me and the world.

Far in the distance, higher than the skies, a whistle blew.

When I'll open that door,

the way ahead the dream land will be in sight.

I feel like I can now follow a new track,

one that surpasses my imagination.

Come on, let's break free

from this moratorium

and surmount, get over

that measly break.

NOTE

(1) 詩 (shi, ‘poem’) is sung as 歌 (uta, ‘song’)
(2) プラマイ (puramai, ‘plus-minus’) is a mathematical term to indicate a precise approximation, or a margin of error. It is also the short form of the waseigo プラマイゼロ (‘plus-minus zero’), meaning that a situation comes out even. Colloquially, it is used as an adverb synonym of “approximately.”
I have chosen to emphasise it with “no loss, no gain,” adding a nod to finances with “break-even,”, to carry the mathematical imagery of the following line.
