NOTE

The plushies strike the “New Year’s Eve bell,” also known as Joya no Kane (除夜の鐘) This bell-striking is part of the Japanese Buddhist tradition: most temples ring bells 108 times at temples on New Year’s Eve. Some teachings associate the number 108 to the “108 worldly desires” that stand in one’s life, notably fomented by material desires.
Thus, “purifying your soul” stands for freeing oneself from their worries and anxieties, and entering the next year with a free state of mind.
